Hi my name is Alex and I’m doing the Environmental Management and Sustainable Development masters program at Monash University. I have a background in theatre and the performing arts. What really interests me is stories and how we communicate idea’s in a way so they can be received. Communicating idea’s and using stories for environmental gain is my passion and where I want my career to take me after graduating. Before studying at Monash while I was pursuing my creative endeavours I made coffee for a living. I’m pretty good at it. At the moment I’m lucky enough to be working for VACRO (Victorian Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders) teaching guys who are part of the prison system hospitality skills and how to make specialty coffee. Martin Luther King said “You can have no influence over those for whom you have underlying contempt”. We already have so many of the answers we need for a sustainable future. Half the battle is spreading the idea’s for change in a way that is palatable for people. That doesn’t make people feel overwhelmed. That doesn’t allow us to disconnect and disassociate from our actions. I think coffee is a way to start that conversation. The whole conundrum of sustainability exists inside your cup of coffee.
