Hong Kong famously has more Rolls Royce's per capita than any other country in the world! Yet whilst lavish lifestyle and immense wealth is indeed enjoyed by a conspicuous urban elite of largely Western and Chinese immigrants, widespread poverty is certainly present! Hong Kong has the highest income gap of any developed economy in the world with 1 in 5 living below the poverty line, poor families crammed into tiny, subdivided flats. Hong Kong is also, like many western countries, tackling an ageing population with 1 in 3 seniors unable to meet basic nutritional needs. Urban poverty, like in other global mega-cities, is dangerously discreet, marginalised by glamorous lifestyles and gleaming sky scrapers! Being such an active business centre, perhaps Corporate Social Responsibility may see the huge Hong Kong urban poor empowered in the future.
